SOUL KINGDOM, June 27, at Parker Pie Wings. This went pretty well, although it was VERY hot. We filled the restaurant (including my brother-in-law, some DES teachers, Desiree B and Saigelyn), people danced the whole night, and we played pretty well. I feel like I maintained focus and can only think of a few problems, the biggest one being that I was unable to play the unison section in Sir Duke correctly. A few other little issues were when "Into the Mystic" was in Eb, but the "D#" was misinterpreted as "Db." It wasn't a big deal, although some band members thought it was a bigger deal than others. I think the guitarists were supposed to start on "Couldn't Get it Right," but Brett ended up being alone for a bit. Brick House normally starts with a drum fill, so when it didn't happen I got a bit confused, though I came in pretty soon. I read the music on a few pieces because I didn't trust my memory, and I used the fretless less as the evening went on.
CITY BAND, July 3, at the Municipal Bldg. I played snare drum & bass drum, with the occasional cymbal. Carlo helped me out, although was pretty nervous about playing the snare parts. I totally changed a few parts, but never stopped!

MARCHING BAND, July 4, Derby Parade. I played trumpet for this one, and directed the group
through five different pieces, although we pared it down to two pieces that worked best: Born to be Wild and 7-Nation Army. There were about 25 band members, including two future students, two alumni, a music teacher and one parent. SO MANY PEOPLE were glad that we had a marching band in the parade and they let me know it!
KINGDOM DIXIE, July 4, in the front yard at NCUJHS. This was a volunteer gig (although that was a surprise to me!) Brett Hoffman sat in on drums, which was very cool. He kept the tempos crisp and followed my cues for solos & endings really well.

SOUL KINGDOM, July 4, Gardner Park. I was really happy with my playing for this gig, and the group played really well. Ron didn't think his solos were as good as they could have been. Emily had to have been exhausted, having driven up from Connecticut for the gig. For some reason we cut The Chicken short, although we all did it together. I got all the unison runs in Sir Duke correctly. I think we may have skipped a chorus in Got to Get You and we forgot to go to the IV in I've Been Working, but those were all such minor issues. This is an awesome band, and hopefully we get more gigs. It was a big, appreciative audience.
